It looks like generic Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo is definitely going away for awhile. Teva, the manufacturer of generic Tri-Lo-Sprintec, recently announced that they’ve entered into an agreement to settle the patent infringement lawsuit that Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals brought forth a few weeks ago. Under this agreement, a generic version of this oral contraceptive won’t be available again until December 31, 2015! Right now, most pharmacies still have this generic on their shelves. So, if you take this medication, stocking up on your prescription now could save you a few bucks.

Could this be why I was charged the brand name price even though I received the generic, Tri-Lo-Sprintec?
As I mentioned when I first wrote about the appearance of Generic Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo on the market, generic Tri-Lo-Sprintec isn't much cheaper than brand-name Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. You probably are paying less than you would for the the brand-name version. However, you're probably not saving a significant amount.
when will the generic be pulled off the market?
The generic version isn't actually being pulled from the market. Instead, the manufacturer of the generic version simply can't ship anymore of their product to wholesalers. When drug wholesalers finally run out of their current supplies of generic Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, then this drug will no longer be available.
While I initially thought that this drug would have been gone by now, most wholesalers actually still have it in stock. So, get the generic version while you can. I don't expect it to last too much longer.
I am a big fan of generics and like saving money, but Tri-Lo Sprintec is by no means the same as the name brand drug. I had severe adverse reactions to this medication and thought I had to be imagining it until I went on the web and found tons of message boards with hundreds of postings from women who had the same reaction I was having. It is NOT the same and for all I care, they could take it off the market for good. I'd rather pay full price for a brand that works without severe negative side effects.
I second Alisons remark. If anyone out there is looking to save money and get this, please do not! It isn't worth it! I've had some terrible side effects from this awful medication and I never experience side effects. Pain, depression, panic attacks, mood swings...all from taking this pill for less than 3 weeks. It should be taken off the market forever.
With my insurance, generic cost $5 each month, where ortho costs $45.
i just went to fill my prescription for tri-lo-sprintec today and was told that it was no longer available. So instead of paying $15 co-pay for a month's supply, i was charged $50! (It was $77 but my BCBS only covered $17.77). I'm about to call my doctor and get put on something else. $50/mo is too much for me!
I paid $5 / month for Tri-Lo Sprintec, and have to pay $50 per month for Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. Yuck! My insurance co. claims that there are other generics for OTCL, even though they have totally different progesterone compounds -- I tried a bunch before TLS was introduced, and all of them made me insane. I had absolutely no problems or side effects from TLS and I'm really annoyed that I now have to pay $50 instead of $5 per month...
